I have been exploring the realm of the abstract form
the very beginning of my art career. Public recognition of my work came when I
won a scholarship award at the first Ravi Jain Annual in 1993. That was
straight after my academic career. But I never look back. Seeing progress in
the realm of abstractionism, Dhoomimal Gallery gave an opening to me and my
first solo show met with unexpected success. This propelled me to explore the
realm of the abstract still further. Ever since then my path has been that of
exploration and coming up with new equations of form and space. For form
acquires meaning only in terms of space. Also, how imageries, with a number of
abstract form, are structured in spatial terms and how they are inter – related
and integrated. A lot goes into such structuring. For this happens without a
prior design, without a theme or concept. In fact there is no destination to
arrive at till one has arrived at a spot where he has to stay, this far and no
further.
Starting and arriving … that is the journey of the
abstractionist Forms used in as abstract work might be familiar. But their
structuring into a viable image has been my prime concern all along and it has
been a real task to make the unfamiliar, that is to say , acceptable after
awhile – after due understanding and appreciation on the part of audience.
Needless to say here, that I have to create my own audience every time &
offer my work for public viewing. Puzzled looks, condescending looks assessing
and assimilating looks have been my lot in the art world. But I have to leave
my past behind. Every new phase in my work is really not the growth of my work
but the growth of my sensibility and my ability to create and in this my past
work is no guide. Every time I have to break a new ground. In fact and deed
every art show of mine is a new proposal in formal relations needing public
vetting and I can say by now that I have been getting their endorsement.
My forthcoming show is an exercise in offering new formal
relations in tone and texture and in spatial structuring. It is meant to create
wider ground for abstract art and for furthering new sensibilities. For without
the development of such sensibilities on the part of the audience abstract act
could not be gauged and appreciated. It is like classical music. The audiences
have to
Know the rages or the
symphony structures. My effort always is to enter into a dialogue with my
audience (as I do with my space, form and colors).
Meaningful interaction with
my work is a priori to understand my work and abstract art in general. An
abstractionist therefore has to effort for the initiation of such dialogue
through his work. And it is an endless process. It goes on through the artist’s
creative period and when it stops, questions might be raised about an artist’s
creativity. But my on part I am sure that such a moment has not arrived yet. I
have miles and miles to go before I sleep and my audience of course has to keep
up with my work
I am sure this will go on … my search and my audience’s
patience and effort to bear with me
